Aliens from Planet X . . . . . perhaps?!

Last week saw the release by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in the UK of the latest batch of unidentified flying object (UFO) related sightings covering the years 1994 to 2000. Over 6000 previously top secret pages detail hundreds of "not of this world" experiences involving close encounters, strange flying objects and eerie lights in the sky!

1996 seems to have been a very busy year for our alien friends with no fewer than 609 reports of sightings being filed with the MOD. Most simply involve descriptions of strange unexplained lights or objects in the sky that leave behind no evidence afterwards, however, just occasionally there is a case that seems to be a little more complex.

One example of this was the account of a man in 1997 who developed an unexplained illness after being hit by a beam of light from a UFO. Whilst driving his car in Wales one night he saw a massive star approaching from the east. A tube of light came down, surrounding him for about 5 minutes. The man was frightened and began to feel ill, and indeed later that night he was physically sick. He found that his mobile phone and radio wouldn't work and later discovered that his car was covered in a dust. By the next day he was still feeling unwell and had developed a skin condition that needed medical treatment.

Fact or fiction?

Coincidently, just 5 months previous to this report a film called Phenomenon was released starring John Travolta, with a storyline about a man who was struck by a bright light from the sky and suddenly becomes a genius overnight with the power of telekinesis! A vivid imagination do you think or more to it than that?

Certainly if you consider that there are estimated to be 100 thousand million stars in just our galaxy The Milky Way, and that there are thought to be millions upon millions of other galaxies other than our own, the fact is that we can not prove nor assume that other life forms do not exist. It would seem unlikely in our own solar system as every other planetary mass is either horrendously hot or ferociously cold but none the less, as always in science . . . keep an open mind.

This fifth release of papers is part of an ongoing project between the Ministry of Defence and the National Archives, and you should be able to see more by going to http://ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk
