The Multiverse and Multiple Me!

Just imagine that you exist in another Universe, a place equal to the one we know, but somewhere else. Would your life be the same - or not?! Would facts and events be different - or not?! Pure fiction? There are those who would disagree and who firmly believe that there are a series of Universes scattered around. The concept of the "Multiverse" has its origin in a complex combination that embraces ideas coming from Modern Cosmology, Quantum Physics and the Theory of Relativity. The most commonly used analogy is a group of separate and spread out soap bubbles, floating in an infinite space.

Despite it being a non-scientific theory with no evidence to back it up, many people embrace it. To its supporters, these parallel Universes could even be interconnected through special cosmic structures, such as black holes and wormholes. Strange? It may well be. Impossible? Apparently not. From a quantum perspective, multiple Universes, independent and isolated, always arise in response to each viable option.

Thus, you and I would be in this (known) and in other (unknown) Universes, at the same time, spread out across the vast cosmic expanse. In the majority of these, our lives would be totally different, as many of the quantum decisions taken would have led us to other realities. While in some of these soap bubbles our existence would be a reflection of our life on Earth, like in a mirror.

Fiction or reality - the concept of a Multiverse is nonetheless interesting (and scary!). However, to live in parallel Universes touches on other complex and controversial ideas, such as eternity and the diversity of one's own soul, which would be surrounded by various (and countless!) reflections of ourselves.

Could it be DiCaprio on Mars . . . . .

In the film production The Martian by Director Ridley Scott, actor Matt Damon who plays the role of American astronaut Mark Watney, was left behind by the crew that explored Mars after being presumed dead following an intense sandstorm. Until the error was identified and rescue occurred, a total of four years passed by. During this period, Watney had to find ways to survive, all alone, on the Red Planet.

Perhaps inspired by the brilliant performance of his fellow Hollywood colleague, actor Leonardo DiCaprio revealed earlier this month that he has already signed up for a trip to Mars. His intention is to participate in the first SpaceX mission being organised by entrepreneur Elon Musk, who wants to put the first human on Martian soil in 2025.

The Interplanetary Transport System designed by SpaceX, composed of reusable rockets and a spacecraft that can be refueled and resupplied in space, should make a first test flight in two years time, involving a round trip to the Red Planet, without passengers. Thus, the flight of the Red Dragon spacecraft will pave the way for the first humans to travel from Earth to Mars with greater safety.

If all goes as planned, the first manned mission will last between 80-150 days and each passenger will have to shell out $200,000 per ticket. As the SpaceX spacecraft could hold up to a 100-strong crew, Musk predicts that by 2060, one million Earthlings could be living on Mars.

For now, however, the possibility of a journey to Mars would seem restricted to the wealthy only. And us lowly Earthlings will cheer on Mr. Musk and hope he can soon find a way to open up access to interplanetary missions to the populace.

As for Mr DiCaprio - do you really think we can expect to see him one day on the Red Planet? Or is it more likely to be a touch of Hollywood embellishment to spin a good story?

Women in science with excellence . . . .

I am delighted this week to add a link to the Women in Science with Excellence website, featuring an article about my good friend Alamelu Sundaresan, known by most simply as Lalita. Having first met at a congress in Greece more years ago than I care to mention, I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to collaborate with her over the years and we currently have plans to scientifically delve more deeply into the topic of bone loss in microgravity!

Lalita is a Professor at the Texas Southern University and University of Texas, and is also
a Visiting Scientist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, having had experiments sent up to the International Space Station. She is a shining example of a role model for future generations of young women who may be drawn to the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, which are fields where gender gaps still exist.
