Armstrong joined the US space programme in 1962 after having been a Navy jet fighter pilot. He flew only two missions, both as Command Pilot with the first being on Gemini 8 which launched in 1966, and the second with Apollo II in 1969. He spent a total of 8 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes, and 31 seconds in space.
