Why Explore Space?

It is human nature to want to explore our environment, to learn about the world in which we live and to gain a better understanding of all that surrounds us. Space exploration is simply a natural extension of that desire as we seek greater knowledge about our planet Earth in relation to a vast Universe.

Importantly also, the advances in science and technology made as a result of this exploration have spinoffs that benefit us all in many ways not even realised. For example, MRI scanners, fire detectors, satellite navigation, robotic hands, wireless communications, and even sports bras!

The list really is endless.

What effect does Space have on the human body?

Human beings are affected and shaped by Earth's gravity and this force can influence our physiology in various ways. When in Space, in a microgravity environment, the human body's structure and physiology changes. This can have many consequences, such as alterations in the functioning of cardiovascular, haematologic and immune systems, and especially causing bone loss and muscle atrophy. Adaptation to this kind of environment is difficult and imposes huge challenges. The majority of astronauts also experience space motion sickness at some level.
